Roughly six of every ten icebreakers afloat were built in Finnish shipyards.

Kemi was founded in 1869 at the mouth of the Kemijoki, Finland's longest river. Pulp, paper and timber moved out through Ajos, the deep-water harbour on the town's southern spit. Sea ice on the Perämeri regularly exceeds half a metre, and pressure ridges pile it far higher. Finns call such a ship a jäänmurtaja — an ice-crusher — and the name is literal. Keeping Ajos open through the dark months required reinforced bows, engines sized for a vessel twice the length, and crews who read ice as sailors elsewhere read weather.
Ice-class hulls do not cut ice so much as climb it: the bow rides onto the sheet until the ship's weight fractures it from above. The principle has not changed since the 1950s, only the power driving it.
The passenger tradition began with one retired ship. Sampo, launched in 1960 at the Wärtsilä yard in Helsinki, worked Finland's northern channels for twenty-seven years before the state withdrew her in 1987. Rather than scrap the hull, Kemi kept it. From 1988 the vessel carried passengers instead of convoys, an early example of the arctic icebreaker cruise as a commercial idea. The Arktis extends that line, sailing the same frozen roads with the same purpose: to show the Gulf of Bothnia from the deck of a ship built to break it.
Ashore, the town added a second winter landmark. The Kemi SnowCastle has been rebuilt from snow and sea ice every year since 1996, and now anchors a year-round snow complex that serves as the check-in point at Rivinkarintie 69. Together the two form an unusual pairing: a fortress that melts each spring, and a ship that outlives what melts it.
