The Sampo was built to break ice for freighters, not to carry sightseers. Launched in 1960 and entered into state service in 1961, the 75-metre vessel spent twenty-six winters clearing lanes through the Gulf of Bothnia for Finnish cargo traffic. State duty ended in 1987.

Geography made it possible. Kemi stands at the mouth of the Kemijoki river on the Bothnian Bay, the northernmost basin of the Baltic and among the least saline waters in Europe.
